Adult Education

Access to adult education improves the well-being of the entire family. We offer a supportive, goal-directed environment where Amani residents can reach their educational goals with individualized learning plans. In partnership with Milwaukee Area Technical College, we offer:

  • Adult Basic Education: Students receive one-on-one academic support in reading, writing, math and computer literacy.
  • GED/HSED Preparation Classes: MATC staff partner with Dominican Center tutors to provide adult classes on basic academic skills necessary for a referral to the General Education Diploma (GED) or High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED) programs at the other community based organizations. Students completing the program receive degrees directly from MATC.
  • Basic Computer Classes: For those looking to build their computer skills. Taught by MATC, this free Basic Computer Class is open to anyone in the community every Friday (except holidays) at 10am. Whether brand-new to technology or needing a refresher, students get hands-on support and learn to navigate the internet and email, create and save documents and other essential skills.
Contact Dominican Center at [email protected] to sign up for Adult Education Program. We are currently accepting enrollment in no fee adult education classes for 2025.

Community Efforts

With the support of our partners, we seek to:
  • Engage organizations working in Amani that address stress, trauma, loss, mental health and other risk factors in adults and youth.
  • Increase residents’ skills in advocacy and securing resources related to family well-being and life-long learning.
  • Increase residents’ participation in decision-making with organizations and systems focused on education and family well-being.

Lead Education

Amani Safe Water Project
The Amani Safe Water Project seeks to address the lack of safe water and lead poisoning that disproportionately affects the 53206-zip code, of which Amani is a significant part. Neighborhoods in this zip code have more lead laterals, lead-contaminated water and the highest number of children with elevated blood levels in Milwaukee.

This program provides households with water filters, replacement cartridges and education programs regarding lead-contaminated water and other sources of lead poisoning.

Nutrition & Lead Task Force
We partnered with the Hunger Task Force to create The Nutrition & Lead Task Force in Amani through the Well Fed Means Less Lead Campaign, a canvassing program to address the serious levels of lead in paint, water and soil.

The door-to-door canvass engaged residents with in-depth conversations about the presence of lead in and around the home; how to identify sources of lead; self-help steps to minimize household lead exposure; and the important role nutrition plays in a diet protected from lead.

For these efforts, we were awarded the
2018 Nonprofit Collaboration of the Year by BizTimes Media alongside the Hunger Task Force.
