The Dominican Center believes true safety comes from within the community — when neighbors are connected, engaged, and resourced to make change. We are proud to support initiatives that not only reduce crime but also build hope, opportunity, and resilience because we believe that every resident deserves to feel safe and proud of their neighborhood. That’s why we’ve partnered with local organizations, resident leaders, and law enforcement to create and support sustainable safety initiatives in the Amani neighborhood..
Neighborhood Safety Initiatives Our approach to safety is rooted in collaboration, prevention, and empowerment. Key initiatives include:
Amani Resident Leadership Support We provide development and support of resident-led block clubs and watches that help build trust among neighbors, improve communication, and promote a culture of looking out for one another. Through regular meetings and open dialogue with the Milwaukee Police Department, we foster transparency and mutual respect.
Environmental Improvements Safety isn't just about policing — it's also about the built environment. We’ve led clean-up efforts, improved lighting in high-traffic areas, and supported community gardens and public art that instill neighborhood pride and deter crime. We've partnered with law enforcement and leaders to learn the practice of CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) in order to inform residents.
Community Partnership Efforts In an effort to advance the safety of the Amani neighborhood, we partner with community organizations to foster communication between neighbors to get to know each other, interact and share information. We work to foster civic engagement and address public safety concerns by working with residents, partners and officials.
The Results: A Safer Amani Thanks to the commitment of our community and partners, we’ve seen measurable progress:
Reductions in both violent and non-violent crime in Amani.
More than 300 residents engaged in safety and leadership programs since 2020.
Abandoned properties throughout Amani secured or revitalized, reducing opportunities for criminal activity.
