Amani Safe Water Project
The Amani Safe Water Project seeks to address the lack of safe water and lead poisoning that disproportionately affects the 53206-zip code, of which Amani is a significant part. Neighborhoods in this zip code have more lead laterals, lead-contaminated water and the highest number of children with elevated blood levels in Milwaukee. This program provides households with water filters, replacement cartridges and education programs regarding lead-contaminated water and other sources of lead poisoning. Nutrition & Lead Task Force We partnered with the Hunger Task Force to create The Nutrition & Lead Task Force in Amani through the Well Fed Means Less Lead Campaign, a canvassing program to address the serious levels of lead in paint, water and soil. The door-to-door canvass engaged residents with in-depth conversations about the presence of lead in and around the home; how to identify sources of lead; self-help steps to minimize household lead exposure; and the important role nutrition plays in a diet protected from lead. For these efforts, we were awarded the 2018 Nonprofit Collaboration of the Year by BizTimes Media alongside the Hunger Task Force. |
